The Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre at Craiglockhart Campus, Napier University, Edinburgh  9.30am  – 4.30pm

9.50am              Welcome from John Stewart, Chair of the UK Noise Association.  John Stewart has worked on transport and noise issues for the past 25 years.

 

9.55am              Brian Adam SNP MSP

Brian Adam, the Scottish Nationalist MSP for Aberdeen North has shown a lot of interest in noise issues.  He will provide a political perspective.

 

10.00am            Keynote Speech: Dr Sean Smith: Depute Director, Building Performance Centre, Napier University. 

                         Sean Smith is the co-author of “Housing and Sound Insulation.” He is acknowledged as one of the UK’s leading experts on sound insulation whose work is driving government policy forward.

11.15am            A Star Rating System for Homes – Robert Hanson

Robert Hanson is a barrister with degrees in business and law, currently studying for a PhD at the Bartlett School of the Built Environment, University College London, whose work on developing a star rating system for homes has caught the imagination of people across the UK.  He will explain how a system of stars can be used to “noise-rate” homes.

 

11.45am            Making the Links with Thermal Insulation – Dr Alina Congreve, University College London

                         Alina Congreve, an expert in thermal insulation, is Director of the Housing Futures Programme at the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies.  She will outline ways in which environmentally-friendly materials can improve both thermal and acoustic insulation.

                        

12.15am            What Industry can do - Iain Fairnington of the A. Proctor Group

                         Iain Fairnington, who has a degree in Building Engineering from Napier University and has spent 14years in product development, will outline sound insulation products and systems which meet the building regulations.

2.00pm              Sound Insulation and the Law – Professor Frank McManus, Professor of Law at Napier University

Frank McManus will outline the legal barriers that exists, but also examine ways in which the law can be used to improve sound insulation.

 

2.25pm                    The Tenant’s Perspective – Val Weedon MBE

Val Weedon is the Co-ordinator of the UK Noise Association.  She first got involved in noise issues 15 years ago when she experienced a noise problem when living in a south London council estate.

 

2.40pm              Wilson Shaw, BCA Insulation for Maryhill Housing Association

                         “Sound Insulation Pilot Project”

What one Housing Association is doing to improve things for their tenants.

3.45pm              Ron Ashton, Director of Neighbourhood Services, Angus Council

                         Ron Ashton has a broad experience in housing and neighbourhood services.  He works closely with the Scottish Executive and is involved in the Joint Futures Programme and looking at ways forward for community planning.  Ron will outline the ways in which local authorities and housing associations can tackle noise problems in the community
